Ms. Marguerite Nebelsztein Intreviews Higher Education Institute of Karwan Chancellor

Why and when did you join Karwan?

I joined Karwan on the first of march 2010. For different reasons. First I have spent my whole life in the education area and most of my studies were done abroad. I wished to come back to Afghanistan and to serve the field of education. It was a good opportunity for me when I was asked to work here. It is the place of my dreams because of the education, to serve an educated generation, the young generation, and to share with them all the knowledge that I gain in the past, in more than 20 years. I got experience in the fields of education when I studied in Egypt during eleven years, USA ten years and United Arab Emirates during three years.

Why did you choose to be a teacher?

Besides being Chancellor, I am also lecturer. It is the reason why I am here in Karwan, on the first place, more than chancellor. Because as a teacher, as I said, I can transfer the knowledge I gain in the best period of my life, studying Islamic legislation. So I do not want to  keep knowledge for myself. I want to share it with students who are future leaders of the country, to the ones we expect that they will rule and move the country to a better situation and position.

What is your background?

First about my Educational background, I started with a diploma from Abu Hanifa High School of Kabul. Then I obtain a Bachelor in Islamic Economics from the Science and Technology University of Pakistan and another bachelor in Law and Islamic Legislation at the Alazar University of Cairo, Egypt. In the same city, I obtained a Master degree in International Law in Arab University of Cairo. I later studied and get a Master in General Law from University of Missouri, Kansas City, State of Missouri in USA.
I am currently working on my PhD on International Negotiations, in Cairo.

About my working experience, I have spent ten years working for Cairo Radio and TV Union Media, on a Pashto program broadcast in Afghanistan. I also worked for the Census agency of Kansa City during two years and as Director Manager for an import New York based company, Cherry during five years. I have been Director here in Afghanistan, of the desk for Relation with International Parliaments at the National Assembly of Afghanistan in Kabul during a year.

In Kabul I have been as well during six months, director of international relations for parliamentary affairs. I worked one year with editors and team leaders of Ashna TV, Voice of America, Washington DC.
And I gain self business experience during more than six years in USA and UAE.

Currently I am Karwan Higher Education Institute of Karwan Chancellor and head of Arbitration and legal services.

What are the exact tasks of your job?
Chancellor is the principal, president of a university; he is heading both administrative and educational side of the institute.

What are the plans for short term?
We introduced standards in private educaiton, we work on curriculums and it will be a base for education that can compete on international level. Also I would like to provide the best environment for our students, in order to help them gaining standard education. To reach this goal we have to set up a strong library and we focus a lot to collect experts as well as high educated professors.

We have to create strong and useful relationships with all universities, private and governmental, in the country and abroad. We are looking for the next step to get membership with international university association, specifically in Islamic countries, US and Europe. For the long term we need a strong future study strategy plan.

How Karwan is different from the other private universities of Kabul?
We are small but we work professionally, quality not the quantity. And we want to work better than what is required by Ministry of High Education.  We are for profits universities but our thinking is not for profit.

How do u see Karwan in the future?
I hope that we become one of the most famous universities, not only in Afghanistan and in the region, but also worldwide level. I know some people will doubt right now on this issue but if we look to the history of the most famous universities in the world right now, they were establish very small and very simple and then by passing the time and working hard they got the name that they deserve.
